This "dramatic symphony" uses the faces and themes of the ancient Ukrainian legends and archetypes Marko Prokliaty, Mamai and Crazy Halya, as well as the Eastern legend of Mankurt, a child of a nomadic tribe who disengaged from the memory of his race. "Someone once said of Brahms that he kept on writing a single symphony throughout his life, although formally he composed four of them.
