Games For Faust is the Kurbas Theatre’s work based on Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment. In its game-world atmosphere, the Mephistophelean Svidrigailov tries to convince the Faustian Raskolnikov into turning over his sister Dunya (or rather his soul) in exchange for freedom from the laws of morality. By mixing song, movement, and speech, this overtly playful and multi-prizewinning production breaks from the tradition of viewing the themes of Crime and Punishment through the dark lens of a psychological Gothic novel, and explores the work through the lightness of Dostoevsky’s inherent laughter.
